We always birded early because of the construction. Paolino says that the resorts being built now on the various cayos will eventually hold 32,000 rooms (by comparison, SF had 33,600 hotel rooms in 2012). The water is being pumped from the mainland, with little concern for the consequences. There will come time, fairly soon, I fear, when Cuban endemics and West Indies specialities, like the Cuban Gnatcatcher and Bahama Mockingbird, will be difficult or impossible to find.
