Well present, limited footprint

Commissioned by Ekwadraat and Oosterhof Holman, Achterbosch Architecten made the design for a sustainable and circular office building on the former landfill (garbage) site "Schenkenschans," located in the middle of the new Energy Campus Leeuwarden. The most northerly point of the landfill site is the perfect location for this striking building, built on top of the hill. Building on this artificial mountain requires an innovative, light and efficient development because the usable substrate is relatively thin and unstable. The building is placed on 108 individually adjustable columns with thirty centimeters of clearance to absorb possible subsidence in the next fifty years. To keep these columns accessible, the building is placed 1.5 meters higher than ground level, which gives the pavilion-like character. Most of the building components, including the steel structure, are easy to dismantle, which means that it is possible to rebuild the building on another location. Recycled materials were used as much as possible, like an old used gymnasium floor was used for the wooden wall covering in the interior, and a circular floor covering and refurbished second-hand furniture were used. Other aspects that increase the sustainability of the building are the possibilities of the flexible layout map and the relatively simple expandability of the building. The building is completely self-sufficient in terms of energy management. There is no external gas connection, electricity is generated using PV panels and the air heating and cooling is done by means of air heat pumps concealed in the adjacent bicycle shed. Partly the “garbage” gas from the dump is used for heating. The Energy Knowledge Centre on top of the garbage dump it’s the first of its kind and shows, in a smart and effective way, how to “double use” sites, even in this former “dirty” environment.
