Le phare de Calais est un phare d’atterrissage. C’est une aide à la navigation pour les navires qui entrent au port, et un repère pour ceux qui croisent dans le Détroit du Pas-de-Calais, le plus fréquenté du monde. Il est classé « monument historique » depuis 2010.
Une bâtisse lui est accolée. C’est l’ancien logement du gardien. En effet, il fallait absolument habiter sur place pour entretenir la lentille et le système d’éclairage lorsqu'il fonctionnait à l’huile puis au pétrole et que son mécanisme de rotation devait être remonté régulièrement. Aujourd'hui le phare fonctionne à l’électricité. Il est entièrement automatisé et peut être télécommandé.

A building is attached to it. This is the former guard's house. Indeed, it was absolutely necessary to live on site to maintain the lens and the lighting system when it operated with oil and then with kerosene and its rotation mechanism had to be reassembled regularly. Today the lighthouse runs on electricity. It is fully automated and can be remote controlled.
