Grand Canyon

The vastness of the canyon framed by piñon pines. The only way even to suggest the scale of the Grand Canyon in a photo is to include something on a human scale. But when you see it, it’s still far, far bigger than you expect. This was in 1956. I’d seen the canyon just a year before, and I still wasn’t prepared for the size of this enormous chaos.

Almost every one of these old shots is uncropped. Every now and then, I have to level the horizon on one of these old slide scans, so the rounded corners of the cardboard mounts aren't symmetrical and I crop them. I wasn't all that careful about leveling shots when I was 16.
