I've posted a color version of this image. I think the design, light, and fabulous brickwork work in that version and this one. There may be as many as 25 million bricks in the fort. Enlarging will give you a better idea of the wonderful skills of the masons who built this structure. Ironically, as solid as it looks, the fort was taken in a matter of hours when the Union army arrived. They had rifled cannons; the Confederates didn't.
