The Sun Streams Down on Christ Church, Frederica

Many years ago, I read Eugenia Price's novel The Beloved Invader, about Anson Greene Phelps Dodge, Jr. and his work in building the new Christ Church. The area of St. Simons Island around Christ Church and Ft. Frederica has long been one of my very favorite places. The story of this church is an interesting one.

In 1733 James Edward Oglethorpe founded the city of Savannah and the colony of Georgia. In 1736 he began a fort and settlement town on St. Simons Island, about eighty miles to the south. Fort Frederica was a defense against the Spanish, who then occupied what is now Florida. The first religious services were held nearby, in the same year, by Charles Wesley. Christ church was founded by Wesley, who was later joined by his brother John and Charles Whitfield. These three men later began a reform movement, Methodism, within the Church of England that later became the Methodist Church.

The original Christ Church was not built until 1820, then was largely destroyed by Union soldiers in 1962. The current structure was built in 1884 by Anson Dodge, who was only 24 years old at the time. He later became the rector at Christ Church. Dodge also built four other churches on the island as well as an orphanage. At the time of his death at age 38, Dodge was in charge of about fifteen orphans. He is buried in the Christ Church cemetery.

I made this picture with a Leica M2, 35mm f/2 Summicron, and Kodak Tri-X.
