Fortunately it wasn't too cold ... probably in the 40s. The moon was quite bright but it did drizzle several times. I didn't sleep very well with alot of tossing and turning.
I had been contemplating climbing Mount Massive while I was nearby. I would have stashed my pack somewhere below treeline and then climbed. Doing it while hiking the Colorado Trail would mean fewer overall daily miles than during a dayhike. The closest trailhead would add 6 miles to a roundtrip dayhike. In theory, it would have been easier to do it while this close. However, with more anticipated cold weather, I knew I would not want to get up earlier than usual to tackle this challenge. (Leadville is nearby and I recall the forecast for being in the 20s.) I decided to do the hike after finishing this hike instead.
Packed up and hiking by about 7:30 with about 2.5 miles of hiking left in Segment 9 and Holy Cross Wilderness. I took a short break at Timberline Lake Trailhead. In the mornings, after about an hour of hiking and when I come across a water source, I like to take a coffee break. Kind of a second breakfast stop. I dayhiked to Timberline Lake back in 2016. Nice hike to a high alpine lake. This trailhead also leads to Leadville.
