Rule of Thirds

In this project, we had to utilize a grid and the rule of thirds to take our pictures. I think this project forced us to express more creativity and take our subject away from the center. I ended up really liking this project, and although I have previously learned about the rule of thirds, I learned even more from this project about the placement of my subject.

My first picture was taken at a restaurant that my uncle was playing at, TeKila in Sherman Oaks. and I went into a back room of tables where no one was sitting. My other uncle is a photographer and gave me a lens to borrow and play around with, and it had a large zoom so I wanted to play around with it. I pointed it at an empty table and put the salt shaker in the left boxes in the rule of thirds (I had the grid displayed on my camera). This fits into the rule of thirds because the salt shakes and sugar and menu all fit into the left three vertical boxes on the grid. I like this picture because the lighting seemed very mysterious and the were lights from the stoplight outside the restaurant reflecting off of the chair, so the table just looks like it is waiting to be sat at.

My second picture was also taken at that restaurant, and it was of the lead guitar player in the band. I put him in the left boxes of the grid, and had the base of his guitar in the center left box, which is how it fits into the rule of third. The other man is in the top right box on the grid, but he is blurred out because I wanted to focus on the lead guitar player. My favorite part about this picture is how focused the lead guitar player is and how in tune he is with the music.

Overall, this project was very fun and pretty easy. I feel like because it was easier to take pictures (unlike the shadows and reflections) I was able to get more creative and move around more. I learned more about where I should place my subject in order for my pictures to be more intriguing and interesting.
