Raised beach above rock beds on the upper shore, near Cailpie.

Raised beach above rock beds on the upper shore, near Cailpie caves. Kari at the left shows the depth of the ancient beach. The size of the large rounded boulders and the interspersed sea shells shows that they were subjected to longterm exposure to seawater. Caiplie is between Kilrenny and Crail in the east neuk of Fife.

Vertical section of a raised beach above rock beds on the upper shore, near Cailpie caves. The size of the large rounded boulders and the interspersed sea shells shows that they were subjected to longterm exposure to seawater. Note the glacial till directly above the raised beach contains no sea shells. Caiplie is between Kilrenny and Crail in the east neuk of Fife.

The glacial till must have been washed off the land over the raised beach, once it was raised above sea level.
