The three islands of Eilean nan Ron are made up almost entirely of up to 500m of coarse red-brown conglomerate believed to be from the Devonian and contain clasts which include abundant Cambrian quartzites and Durness limestone. This suggests deposition by braided rivers from a north-westerly source.
