Minty Benefits from the Backyard

Here is some mint that I am growing in my backyard. Also known as mentha, the leaves from this herb have some some incredible benefits. You could improve your oral health and freshen your breath, remedy your nausea quickly, relieve symptoms of acne, clear up nose, throat and lung congestion, lose weight, help with memory loss, prevent cancer and plenty more!

Typically every few weeks my wife grabs a couple of these leaves and chops them up and sprinkles them over various Indian dishes. Not only does the food taste great but looks great too! In a few days we plan on freezing some of these mint leaves as it gets colder outside so we can reap the benefits later this winter.

One of the biggest benefits of mint besides making food taste great is aiding in digestion. When ingested it increases bile (fluid secreted by the liver into the small intestine). Mint is also very soothing, calming the actions of the muscles in your digestive system. This is most likely due to the enzyme serine which breaks apart peptide bonds in proteins. In this process serine acts as the amino acid at the active site.
