"A STARVING CITY

Lining up for food in wartime Vienna, no matter the temperature, was everyday undertaking of sheer desperation. By the end of the conflict, no amount of waiting was enough to obtain decent rations. What was issued as corn bread simply fell apart; dried vegetables were so hard that people referred to them as 'barbed wire'." (Information text in the museum)

Josef Engelhart was a Viennese painter and sculptor. "He was one of the leading figures of the art scene in Vienna around 1900 and one of the co-founders of the Vienna Secession." de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josef_Engelhart
