By the River Wien at Dusk
The source of the river Wien is in the Vienna woods. This is a type of river that, as harmless as it looks in normal circumstances, can cause flood disasters in urban areas during heavy rainfall.
"The Wien is subject to huge variations in flow. In its headwaters in the Vienna Woods, the soil is underlain by sandstone. Because of this, during heavy rain the soil quickly saturates, resulting in substantial runoff. Thus, the flow of the Wien can quickly increase from a creek-like 200 litres per second (7.1 cu ft/s) to 450,000 litres per second (16,000 cu ft/s) in the heaviest rains or during the spring snowmelt in the Vienna Woods, a ratio of over 1:2000."*
So the fortification in which it was embedded about 120 years ago had its good reasons. At the same time, a section of Wiener Stadtbahn was built here, which is now used by underground line 4. The whole thing was planned by the Art Nouveau architect Otto Wagner.
The building with the tower is the administrative building for the 13th and 14th districts. The river Wien is the border between the 13th district Hietzing on the left and the 14th district Penzing on the right.
