Jean-Michel Basquiat, 1982
Polaroid photograph by Andy Warhol
Warhol became Basquiat's fatherly friend and they collaborated a lot. Despite his immense artistic and financial success in the mid-1980s, by that time Basquiat was already having drug problems. Warhol's unexpected death on February 22, 1987, however, hit him so hard that from then on he became something of a recluse, as the story goes, and on August 12, 1988, he died of a heroin overdose at the age of 27.
