Gerrit Dou was a Dutch Baroque painter specialised in genre scenes. "With his small-format paintings executed with the utmost precision [frame dimensions of this painting: 62 × 50 × 4.5 cm], Gerrit Dow, the eldest of Rembrandt's pupils, became the founder of the Dutch genre called "fine painting" [Fijnschilders | Feinmalerrei]."
