William Turner (?): Venice

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775 London - 1851 London, attributed | zugeschrieben)

Venice, from the Canale della Giudecca with the Church Santa Maria della Salute, c. 1840 | Venedig, vom Canale della Giudecca aus gesehen, mit der Kirche Santa Maria della Salute, um 1840

Oil on canvas | Öl auf Leinwand

"...William Turner made several trips to Venice, the first in 1819. He was captivated by the light and atmosphere. While in Venice, Turner made pencil drawings and watercolors, using these as resources for his large views in oil, painted back at his London studio. Many of these roughly twenty-five oil paintings - highlights of his art - are today at the Tate Gallery in London. Once in a while, hitherto unknown pictures from Turner's Venetian series come to light, as is the case with this painting. It has yet to be established, however, whether it is Turner's own work or a painting by another artist in Turner's style." (Explanation text in the museum)
