Rest in Peace to The Bus Lady.

Rest in peace to the woman affectionately known as the Bus Lady, Joan Corwin. Joan took the reins of Chappaqua Transportation nearly 50 years ago as a single mother. She helped turn a company on the verge of losing its sole business into a name that is known by most, if not all, transportation professionals throughout New York State, and trusted by all in Chappaqua. She was extremely hands on, known for her exceptional leadership qualities. Many employees have been with the company for decades, and she was the reason. She was a woman with charm, a wicked sense of humor, a maternal instinct, and a true passion for what she did that touched all in the community.

Joan's number one priority was student safety. On snow days, she'd be out alongside the plow crews making sure the roads were passable. When town development and road changes affected student bus routes, she went out and conducted traffic studies herself.

She was extremely involved in the community. She donated vehicles for countless occasions, sponsored scholarships, volunteered at local events, and was the first female president of the local Rotary Club. And if all that wasn't enough, she was a registered nurse.

On a personal note, in first grade, the Chappaqua Transportation bus I was riding was struck by a distracted driver. The students and the bus were fine, but within minutes Joan was on the scene, comforting us confused elementary schoolers and attending to the scene.

I would never have found my passion for school buses if not for Joan's pride in her company and fleet. My thoughts are with her family and her extended family of Chappaqua Transportation employees. She will be missed.
