As you walk along the dyke trail at the Cowichan Bay estuary, across the channel is an old dyke that once protected a farm field. The field is reverting, and now fills with water at high tides, and the dyke has grown over with broom, willows and other bushes. Here and there gaps in the bushes let you catch glimpses of the field beyond, and in a few spots you can see old fence posts that once ringed the field. It was a real treat to find this Short-eared Owl sitting on one of these fenceposts enjoying the warm morning sunshine. The light was beautiful, the owl was perfectly framed by the broom bushes, and when it swung its head backwards and gave me a glance I knew I had my shot.
