Lifeboat Station
Established in 1927, the lifeboat station at Drakes Bay was put under the command of the 12 year old U.S. Coast Guard. Heavy motorized lifeboats were launched from the boathouse to the water by marine railway when they were sent on rescue missions.
Eventually the quick response of Coast Guard cutters and helicopters replaced the perilous lifeboat stations.
In 1968 it was decommissioned, then transferred to the National Park Service in 1969.
