Salers calf, three days old.

 

One of the oldest European breeds, the Salers originates in the Auvergne region of the Massif Central in France.

 

This little guy was born in one of the fields at the bottom of my track. He’s such a wee sweetie! His mother is absolutely huge but is very tender and nurturing with him. Because the Salers females produce so much high-quality milk, it won’t take long before the calf is big and strong.

 

I’ve called him Jean-Michel. There is another, three month old calf in the same field - Alex. Alex’s dam died shortly after he was born and has been being hand-fed by my friends. He has now been paired with the other Salers mother, whose baby died at birth, last week. Both calves and mothers are doing very well.
