Great Egret in the Morning Light with Breeding Plumage

I took this photo just after sunrise yesterday at Bombay Hook NWR. As I was at the refuge yesterday, I was thinking about how I don't remember last April having so many photo opportunities. Then I remembered I couldn't travel to Delaware last April or May. I missed what I believe to be the two best months to photograph at Bombay Hook NWR last year.

Thinking of that made me appreciate spending time out there even more than usual. Many of the migratory waterfowl are still hanging around. Many of the wading birds have returned in breeding plumage. Migratory bald eagles are passing through and the resident bald eagles are very active. The waterfowl will likely be gone in May and the bald eagle activity will calm down, but the migratory songbirds will pass through and some additional wading birds and shorebirds will be arriving (hopefully I can catch some black skimmers this year again). It really is a great place and well worth getting up at 4 AM to get there by sunrise. I even put up with the insane amount of biting flies in the Summer.
