Dans les estives, à plus de 1200m d’altitude, un bouquet d’arbres au centre duquel sont nichées, une chapelle et une source sacrée, parmi les plus célèbres d’Auvergne.
Vraisemblablement un lieu de culte druidique qui a été christianisé. La légende raconte en effet qu’une source aurait jaillit lorsque la Vierge des Bergers toucha du doigt le rocher.
Près de cette source un petit sanctuaire fut édifié pour abriter une statue de la Vierge rapportée des croisades. Il fut détruit par les huguenots, et la statue disparut. Le culte de Notre-Dame de la Font-Sainte fut alors célébré dans l’église de Saint-Hippolyte.
Malgré les guerres, les pèlerins continuaient à visiter la source, la Vierge semblait attachée à l’endroit puisqu’elle apparut vers 1740 à une paysanne de Rastoul, Marie Galvain.
La Vierge lui demanda de reconstruire l’oratoire et de faire élever une chapelle. La bergère se rendit à pied à Clermont voir l’évêque Mgr Massillon, célèbre prédicateur, et le prier d’ériger un nouveau sanctuaire.
Il offre à Marie une statue en bois doré de la Vierge et autorise l’édification d’un oratoire en 1743/1744, afin d’y installer la statue de Notre-Dame de la Font-Sainte revêtue d’un habit d’apparat.
Le sanctuaire fut entièrement reconstruit en 1835, puis agrandi en 1886. Depuis le XVIIème siècle le pèlerinage n’a jamais cessé d’attirer une foule nombreuse. La statue de la Vierge comme les bergers et les troupeaux, passe la mauvaise saison à Saint-Hyppolite.
Cette “Vierge transhumante” remonte l’été en procession vers le sanctuaire de la montagne près des bergers, on la redescend en même temps que les troupeaux, dans l’église paroissiale. Accolée au flanc droit de la chapelle se trouve la fontaine.
L’eau y est fraîche et abondante, une louche accrochée à la grille protégeant une statue de la Vierge, reproduction de celle se trouvant dans la chapelle, permet de s’abreuver. Quelles sont les propriétés des eaux de cette source ?

Source of the Font Sainte of Saint-Hippolyte
In the summer pastures, at an altitude of over 1200m, a clump of trees in the center of which are nestled, a chapel and a sacred spring, among the most famous in Auvergne.
Probably a place of druidic worship that was Christianized. Legend has it that a spring gushed forth when the Virgin of the Shepherds touched the rock with her finger.
Near this spring a small sanctuary was built to house a statue of the Virgin brought back from the crusades. It was destroyed by the Huguenots, and the statue disappeared. The cult of Our Lady of the Font-Sainte was then celebrated in the church of Saint-Hippolyte.
Despite the wars, pilgrims continued to visit the spring, the Virgin seemed attached to the place since she appeared around 1740 to a peasant woman from Rastoul, Marie Galvain.
The Virgin asked her to rebuild the oratory and to build a chapel. The shepherdess went on foot to Clermont to see Bishop Mgr Massillon, a famous preacher, and asked him to build a new sanctuary.
He offered Mary a gilded wooden statue of the Virgin and authorized the construction of an oratory in 1743/1744, in order to install the statue of Our Lady of the Font-Sainte dressed in a ceremonial habit.
The sanctuary was completely rebuilt in 1835, then enlarged in 1886. Since the 17th century, the pilgrimage has never ceased to attract large crowds. The statue of the Virgin, like the shepherds and the flocks, spends the bad season in Saint-Hyppolite.
This “transhumant Virgin” goes up in procession in the summer towards the mountain sanctuary near the shepherds, it is brought down at the same time as the flocks, in the parish church. Attached to the right side of the chapel is the fountain.
The water is fresh and abundant, a ladle attached to the grid protecting a statue of the Virgin, a reproduction of the one in the chapel, allows you to drink. What are the properties of the waters of this source?
