Perfoliate Bellwort (Uvularia perfoliata)

The name refers to the way the stem seems to pierce through the leaf blade.

This flower widely distributed in the eastern and southern United States from Texas to New Hampshire, plus the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

However, it is listed as an endangered species by the states of Indiana and New Hampshire, becomes increasingly rare in northern New England, and is absent in Maine.

The Iroquois used an infusion of the roots as a cough medicine as well as for washing sore eyes.
