South Downs view of Lancing Chapel and College, the main A.27 over the Adur Valley and Brighton, beyond.

Commentary.

North of Lancing village this hill is

part of the South Downs National Park,

and rises above the impressive Lancing College Chapel.

I have attended at least three services at the Chapel.

Founded in 1848, it has a 90-metre tall, vaulted Nave, magnificent windows, flying buttresses to support the Nave on the exterior and a splendid Rose Window above the main West Door.

It is not dissimilar to Cambridge’s superb King’s College Chapel.

The story goes that after foundations were laid the budget to complete was inadequate.

Therefore, instead of using a more durable stone like Portland or Purbeck Limestone, costs were cut by using local Wealden Sandstone.

Unfortunately, the salty and sometimes stormy sea-air

and human-made polluting gases, weathered the sandstone, mercilessly.

It proved to be a long-term false economy because after a century or so, much of the stonework needed to be replaced costing millions of pounds.

This shot is enhanced by the vibrant Ox-Eye Daisies and includes the main A.27 road, Shoreham, Brighton and Seaford Head.
