The beautiful estuary of the River Dart looking from Dartmouth to Kingswear, Devon, England.

Commentary.

Steep, wooded hillsides sweep down

from hedged fields of pasture.

Kingswear, on the north shore, is a humped hill

of white-washed cottages, villas and dwellings,

in undulating and irregular bands.

Anchored, bobbing boats, cruisers and yachts

ride the incoming tide.

The to and fro of the Lower Ferry.

Sun breaking through the clouds

catches white hulls and the gleaming walls

of villas and apartments on the shores of this idyllic estuary.

Views to Kingswear, Dartmouth and west up the River Dart,

towards Agatha Christie’s Georgian mansion of Greenway

and the river-side village of Dittisham.

Guns at the castles, One Gun Point

and Bayards Cove Fort warded off

potential French invasion and opportunistic

Smugglers and Pirates in former years.

The woodland along the banks is so dense, unaltered and mature

that it seems to be sculpted by a giant hammer and chisel

into green mounds of foliage.

Its beauty seems timeless and permanent.
