The Devonian Old Red Sandstone cliffs of Sidmouth, Devon. On the horizon is the chalk headland at Beer.

Commentary.

Red and green Salcombe Hill contrasts beautifully

with the promenade hotels and establishments,

the white chalk of Beer Head in the distance,

the breaking waves and the brilliant white rowing boats stranded high on the beach.

Sidmouth goes back over a thousand years.

Started as a small fishing village, it rose in popularity

when wealthy Georgian, Regency and Victorian families

emulated Royal fashion and took to taking the sun and bathing

in coastal waters around our shoreline.

Its exposed site at the apex of Lyme Bay

prevented it from becoming a yacht and boating haven.

However, its superb cliff-setting keeps it

very popular with day-trippers and week-enders.
