Loch Assynt, Ardvreck Castle and Quinag as sunset looms, Assynt, Sutherland, Scotland.

Commentary.

This is the area of Assynt and Loch Assynt in the far north of Sutherland.

The scenery here is relatively bare.

Trees tend to thrive in small river valleys.

The road is the A.837 to Lochinver.

However, most roads in this North-West corner of Scotland

are still single-track, with passing places.

Behind the castle ruins are two of the three main peaks

that make up the mountain of Quinag, 809 metres.

Ardvreck Castle was built around 1590 and belonged to the Clan MacLeod.

Very little of what was once an extensive castle, still remains.

Only a tower and part of a defensive wall have survived.

After heavy rain, when the loch level can rise, the castle can be found on its own island.

The inland scenery and coastal scenery near Assynt

is wonderfully remote, peaceful, pristine and unspoiled.

Sutherland is a quite amazing, and quite a different county, to any other in Scotland.
