With its squat flint-built tower and squat tile-hung spire, the bells of St. Peter's Parish Church, West Firle, East Sussex, had just rung 06:00 p.m. on a wonderful Spring day.
Commentary.
St. Peter’s Parish Church in West Firle
dates from the 12th. Century.
Like many others, additions
in developing styles, followed
from the 13th. to 19th. Centuries.
A squat Flint Tower is topped by a
equally squat, tiled pyramidal spire.
The Nave and Chancel are also mostly made of Flint.
Being set on a small hill,
the church is easily visible from
Firle Beacon, in the South Downs,
and Firle Place Estate, alike.
Hours are struck to mark the passage of time.
Just as the seasons and farming customs vary,
the colours, activities and annual events
find their place on the calendar.
Change has been plentiful and
significant in the last two centuries,
but the quiet continuity of this rural community
gives it security and a strong uniting bond.
