Early summer at Herstmonceux Castle, East Sussex, England.

Commentary.

Estate mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086.

Herst and Monceux families gave rise to the name.

A Manor House, a mansion, almost a palace.

Owned by Fiennes, Naylor, Hare-Naylor, Lennard and Lowther families over several centuries.

Left to ruin between the 18th. and 20th. Centuries but then renovated and repaired to its present state.

Now an established historical estate with moat, woodland, gardens, falconry, jousting, guided tours and seasonal events.

A massive residence embellished with features of a full-blown castle……castellated frontage, arrow slits, tall round towers and a partial moat of lake-size proportions.

One of the original medieval buildings made largely of brick

and standing almost precisely on the Greenwich Meridian, at 0° East.

A totally impressive historical landmark and well worth several visits.
