Loch Craggie, near Glen Oykel and Ledmore Junction. View to Sugar-Loaf “Suilven.”
Poem.
Like a giant root to an incisor tooth.
A curved and serrated monolith.
A hump-backed Stegosaurus.
A landed whale, of sheer rock.
Such is Suilven, as it rises ominously from
a low, gently undulating landscape of small,
rocky hills and a myriad of small lakes or lochans.
This mountain excites on every viewing,
from up to ten to twenty miles away.
It grabs attention.
It mesmerises.
It is Sutherland’s most iconic and identifiable mountain.
Having climbed both its peaks and seen the
surreal landscape that is Sutherland,
a re-visit is long overdue.
