Description

Measures between 10 and 14 cm. The male is generally greenish above and yellow underneath, has on the head a characteristic black hood, greenish yellow neck and neck, yellow rump, wings and tail are black with very striking yellow stripes in flight. The female has no hood, its head is gray, has the paler back and underneath more greenish than yellow. The juveniles are similar to the female.

 

Habitat

Very varied, it is adapted to many biotopes and altitudes, from sea level to 5000 m. In gardens and parks of the cities. It prefers mountainous areas rich in forests and bushes.

 

Singing

It consists of sharp trills and other notes issued very fast. They sing for more than two minutes uninterruptedly, varying the sounds and changing their tone to beautify and break the monotony of the phrase. When a male sings, it infects the rest forming several groups of choirs in the same tree. It has its moments of singing that usually is in the morning or in the afternoons when it refreshes. When it goes in flocks they maintain the permanent contact with their incessant whistles.

 

 

Reproduction

Between the months of October to March the male and female separate from the flock to look for a breeding territory. The male chases the female singing and showing his black throat. The mating takes place 7 days before you start building the nest. The female without help from the male builds it in 7 or 9 days. It uses vegetal fibers, stems and fine sticks to give a structure and it internally it covers it with wool and hairs. It places it at the end of a tree branch like eucalyptus or in a conifer, at a high altitude (3-4 meters). The laying usually consists of 3-4 bluish white eggs with brown and black spots, length 16.5 mm, width 12.4 mm, weight 1.5 grams. The hatching and the initial care of the young are done by the female and after days the male collaborates."
