NICTD 1000 @ Hegewisch, IL
This isn’t your normal South Shore Freight, as in rare form, The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District or “NICTD” for short, ran a loaded rail train from the start of their track from Kensington all the way to their shops in Michigan City, Indiana while dropping rail at various locations.
This is Day 1 of three of their work, as both NICTD GP38-2s (1000/1001) painted in their inspired South Shore interurban scheme, begin their day shoving up towards Kensington (MP 75.3) to drop rail, then use the crossovers at the Old Rock to head back east on Track 1 to continue their work. They first began at Burnham Yard, waiting until the morning rush had ended, as you can see them crossing the Calumet River Bridge on a rather freezing but yet beautiful code blue morning on Chicago’s East Side in Hegewisch, IL. Taken: 1-27-25
The pair has quite the nice heritage, as the 1000 is former DT&I GP40, now a rebuilt GP38-2 and the 1001 is former MKT and ICG. It’s hard to get these NICTD dudes leading, let alone paired together, so it was a nice change of pace from the regular South Shore Freight power.
