Jessie T* says: I had just arrived in Haida Gwaii and was driving to Masset. Around Tlell, the tiny deer started appearing along the roadside. I probably saw thirty over the next 15 minutes. I later found out that such sightings are not uncommon but the memory will always be special to me. Special and, yes, magical.

Jessie T* says: Not all the shorelines of Haida Gwaii are beaches. The Pillars showcase the rugged beauty of the West Coast of the islands.

Jessie T* says: The image of this kelp-adorned orca is magic in its own right. That it was shot in the waters off Haida Gwaii makes it all the more special.

Jessie T* says: Knowing that the village that once stood here was abandoned about 130 years ago, many of the residents having succumbed to small pox and other introduced disease, fills me with sadness. However, the poles still stand, a testament to the power and artistry of Haida society.

Jessie T* says: Silence and tranquility. The moss and tiny foliage plants which blanket everything give a soft roundness and lend an air of mystery.

Jessie T* says: An expanse of sand that goes on farther than the eye can see. At low tide, adventurous and experienced four-wheel drivers can drive all the way to Rose Spit, 22 km away.

Jessie T* says: This incredible photo gives me the shivers. Rose Spit, seen here, is a narrow strip of sand located at the north-east tip of Graham Island. It is 22 km from any road, accessible only by hiking or driving along the sand of North Beach at low tide.

Jessie T* says: In Haida Gwaii, Old Massett in particular, totems and beautiful longhouses aren't just museum display pieces, they are in use and enjoyed on a daily basis. The longhouse in this photo is in use as a gallery and living area.

Jessie T* says: This photo of two girls proudly showing off their work after cleaning the day's catch makes me smile. The people of Old Massett are incredibly friendly. As you walk around the village, everyone you meet says hello and even those passing in vehicles give a friendly wave.

Jessie T* says: Ravens are plentiful in Haida Gwaii but to capture so many in such a beautiful shot is extraordinary. In addition, the picture is lent an air of mysticism, given that Raven is an important character of much power in Haida legends and, indeed, in the mythology of many cultures.

Jessie T* says: This is one of 18 poles in the village of Old Massett. As with many Haida totems, Raven and Eagle figure prominently in the carvings. Every Haida is either of the Eagle or Raven clan.

Jessie T* says: To the Haida, the eagle is a spirit guide. Eagles, like ravens, are abundant in Haida Gwaii and are more often seen alone, high in the sky, than grouped on the ground as in this unique picture.

Jessie T* says: The Pesuta Shipwreck (1928) is one of the iconic images of Haida Gwaii. In part because it shows how wild and unforgiving the place can be, but also because it is a symbol of how the land seems to reclaim abandoned structures and make them part of the landscape.
