View of Mark Bay

Newcastle Island,

Nanaimo, B.C.

Newcastle Island is a Provincial Park and is accessible only by private boat or on a small water taxi sort of ferry (maximum of 8 passengers). The island has had a colourful and varied past beginning with its use centuries ago by First Nations who had two seasonal villages on it. They call the island Saysutshun.

European settlers first became interested in the island after coal was discovered on it in 1849. That was when it was named Newcastle after Newcastle upon Tyne, England where there was a large coal mining industry at the time. I hope to present pictures of some of the varied aspects of island history later but for now, since I have only really basic processing capabilities on my laptop, I have to settle for simple things.
