Roma 19/10/2018: Fontana in Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere
At the center of Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere stands a fountain that, according to tradition, is the oldest in Rome, dating back to its original form, at the time of Augustus (first century BC) and here arranged by Niccolò V for the Jubilee of 1450, fed by the Alsietina Water. It presents a fifteenth-century typology typical of the Viterbo area and widespread in Rome in the 16th century; the edge of the basin is enriched with four bronze wolf heads (attributed to an intervention by Bramante from the 16th century) and an inscription confirming that the basin, in 1591, was fed by the Felice Aqueduct, through a new pipeline that 'Esquilino arrived here crossing the "bridge of S. Maria".The original fountain, however, was not in its current position, but at the end of the square opposite the church: Gian Lorenzo Bernini was the author in 1658, who also replaced the feeding with Acqua Paola from Fontana Paola. The current fountain is the consequence of a reconstruction of 1692 by Carlo Fontana and by the will of Innocent XII.

Al centro di piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere sorge una fontana che, secondo la tradizione, è la più antica di Roma, risalente, nella forma originaria, all'epoca di Augusto (I secolo a.C.) e qui sistemata per volere di Niccolò V per il Giubileo del 1450, alimentata dall'Acqua Alsietina. Presenta una tipologia quattrocentesca tipica del viterbese e diffusa a Roma nel '500; il bordo della vasca è arricchito con quattro teste di lupo in bronzo (attribuite ad un intervento di Bramante del '500) e da un'iscrizione attestante che la vasca, nel 1591, fu alimentata dall'Acquedotto Felice, attraverso una nuova conduttura che dall'Esquilino giungeva qui attraversando il "ponte di S.Maria". La fontana originaria però non si trovava nella posizione attuale, bensì all'estremità della piazza opposta alla chiesa: autore dello spostamento fu Gian Lorenzo Bernini nel 1658, il quale ne sostituì anche l'alimentazione con l'Acqua Paola proveniente dalla Fontana Paola. La fontana attuale è la conseguenza di una ricostruzione del 1692 ad opera di Carlo Fontana e per volontà di Innocenzo XII.
