Roma 27/04/2018: Madonna dei pellegrini di Caravaggio nella cappella della Madonna di Loreto nella chiesa di Sant'Agostino
In this chapel is found what is considered the greatest masterpiece housed in St. Augustine: the Madonna dei Pellegrini del Caravaggio, executed between 1603 and 1606, which tradition wants painted by the tormented painter when he took refuge in the church to escape the 'arrest and condemnation because he had killed the father of a girl he seduced. Performed in 1604, it is one of the greatest masterpieces of the artist, even if at the time it caused a great scandal due to its "unseemly" character. The artist painted the Virgin with the Child in her arms, who, opening the door, finds two pilgrims kneeling on the threshold. The work is among the most moving of Caravaggio, which with a play of light and shadow brings out a true transparency of faith. The beauty of the Madonna, in contrast with the roughness and simplicity of the two devotees, indicates the grandeur of the woman who with the Child turns a look full of faith, love and light: light that turns into grace on the wrinkled face of the two pilgrims.
