Roma 20/11/2014: Il Mosaico nell'arco di Galla Placidia
The triumphal arch, or the arch that separates the transept from the nave, is said to Galla Placidia, named after the commissioner of the work, which did make the mosaic decoration that still holds during the pontificate of Leo I. In it there are two inscriptions: the first reads : "TEODOSIUS CEPIT PERFECIT PAULI" (“ONORIUS AULAM - DOCTORIS MUNDI SACRATAM CORPORE” (Theodosius began, Honorius performed / classroom to the consecrated body of Paolo docto in the world”) and was replaced in the summit of the arch after the demolition and reconstruction of the nineteenth century; the second reads “Placidiae pia mens operis decus homne [sir] paterni Gaudet pontificis studio splendere Leonis” ("The pious mind (Galla) Placidia rejoices the fatherly work decorum in all the splendor due to the pope Leone care.").
At the center of the composition, above the arch, he is depicted Christ Pantocrator writing inside a circumference from which rays emerge. On its sides, between the red and green clouds of golden sky, there are the four symbols of the Evangelists: the ox of Luke and the angel of Matthew to the left; the eagle of John and Mark's lion on the right. Further down, the two sides of the arch, twenty-four elderly men arranged in four groups are depicted by six, two for each side. They wear the pallium and carry a crown. Further down, on dark blue background, there are the figures of St. Paul (left) and St. Peter (right).

L'arco trionfale, ovvero l'arco che separa il transetto dalla navata centrale, è detto di Galla Placidia, dal nome della committente dell'opera, che fece realizzare la decorazione musiva che lo ricopre tuttora durante il pontificato di Leone I. In esso vi sono due iscrizioni: la prima recita : "TEODOSIUS CEPIT PERFECIT PAULI" (“ONORIUS AULAM - DOCTORIS MUNDI SACRATAM CORPORE" (Teodosio iniziò, Onorio compì” l'aula consacrata al corpo di Paolo dottore del mondo e fu ricollocata nella parte sommitale dell'arco dopo la demolizione mente di (Galla) Placidia e ricostruzione del XIX secolo; la seconda recita “Placidiae pia mens operis decus homne [sir] paterni Gaudet pontificis studio splendereLeonis “ (La pia gioisce del decoro dell'opera paterna in tutto lo splendore dovuto alla cura del pontefice Leone” Al centro della composizione, al disopra dell'arco, è raffigurato Cristo Pantocratore iscritto dentro una circonferenza da cui fuoriescono dei raggi. Ai suoi lati, fra le nuvole rosse e verdi del cielo dorato, vi sono i quattro simboli degli Evangelisti: il bue di Luca e l'angelo di Matteo a sinistra; l'aquila di Giovanni e il leone di Marco a destra. Più in basso, ai due lati dell'arco, sono raffigurati ventiquattro uomini anziani disposti in quattro gruppi da sei, due per ogni lato. Indossano il pallio e portano una corona. Ancora più sotto, su sfondo blu scuro, vi sono le figure di san Paolo (a sinistra) e di san Pietro (a destra).
