The Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls has a Latin cross; the classroom is divided into five naves, separated by four rows of 20 monolithic columns of Montorfano granite, and devoid of side chapels. The lining of the walls, such as the floor, is in polychrome marbles that comprise geometric patterns. Along the two outer aisles, the transept and the nave are opened large arched windows to all sixth, closed with thin alabaster slabs supported by elaborate wrought iron frames. In the end just above the arches that divide the nave, there is a series of rounds containing the portraits of all the Popes, from St. Peter to Pope Francis. Made with the mosaic technique and gold background, they were begun in 1847, during the pontificate of Pius IX.

Above the mosaic medallions in the upper part of the nave and transept, there are 36 frescoes in which are depicted episodes from the life of St. Paul, also wanted by Pius IX, but completed only in 1860.

Ciborium

At the center of the transept of the basilica, under the triumphal arch, is the ciborium, admirable example of Gothic style of Arnolfo di Cambio who realized in collaboration with Peter Oderisio [citation needed] at the behest of the abbot Bartholomew. Made of marble, it is made from a kiosk Gothic supported by four Corinthian columns which has at the base, at the sides, four cusps that open inwards with the pointed arches. At the four corners of the newsstand, within the niches surmounted by triangular gables, there are the statues of St. Paul, St. Peter, Timoteo vescovo and St. Bartholomew, in memory of the client. At the top, the sculptural work ends with a high cusp surmounted by a golden cross and supported by a small porch with Gothic shape openings
