Cymbidium Eastern Venus x oriental cymbidium

Oriental cymbidiums (jensoa section) initially germinate as mychorrhizomes underground and only subsequently produce roots and shoots. Shown here are seedlings that are only 3/4 oriental cymbidium, hoping that the 1/4 of standard cymbidium will give the flexibility required for easy growing in S. California. In this case it appears that some skipped the mycorrhizome stage. For whatever reason some seedlings got to the top of the flasks before many or most of the mycorrhizomes converted to roots and shoots. I will pot these--still in the agar--and mound one or another media up around the mycorrhizomes. Growing jensoa cymbidiiums in vitro is described in Die Orchidee 59(3/4), 2008.
