La Sittelle torchepot est très active dans la recherche de nourriture et cela dans toutes les strates de la forêt, du sol à l'extrémité des branches dans la canopée suivant les saisons et la disponibilité de la ressource.
Elle a un régime alimentaire mixte, insectivore à la belle saison et granivore en hiver..
