IWP: Green Arrow 1.10

By the second day at Bruce’s mansion, I was able to run again. By day 5 I was training with him, getting back on my feet. I could shoot my bow again, and hold my own in hand to hand combat. Against Jason, anyways.

We’d opted to not call my friends and tell them I was alive; Bruce figured if word got out I was alive, the League would strike again, but harsher. He also wanted them to think I was dead so that they would be drawn out. As much as I didn’t like it, I had to agree with Bruce: for now it was better if I was dead.

I hadn’t given it much thought, but I realized that Yin was probably brought back using the Dionesium. It all added up; he had died on the ship, and they’d brought him back to...wherever they brought him to and brought him back, just like Bruce had me.

I whack to the face from Jason’s staff snapped me out of my thoughts. I tripped backwards, holding my nose. Jason was standing above me, smirking.

“Looks like being dead hasn’t done you any good.”

“Yeah? Let’s go again. I’ll bet I wipe the floor with you.”

Bruce had been in and out the last couple of days, working on some new case. At night he and Jason would go out, and during the day Jason and I would spar. We’d developed a rivalry. Neither one of us liked each other, so sparring got all the energy out.

I charged at him, and slammed my batons down, which he blocked with his staff. He pushed me away and I lashed out again, which he dodged. He landed a hit on my back with his staff and I slammed down belly-first onto the floor, feeling like I’d just been kicked in the stomach. I flipped over and rolled out of the way as the staff crashed down where I was. I hopped to my feet and with one baton hit Jason’s staff, getting his attention, and I slammed the other one against his knee. Jason cried out and went down and I gave him an uppercut, sending him reeling back.

Surprisingly, that didn’t stop him. Slowly but surely, Jason got back up and grabbed his staff like a baseball bat, swinging it wildly in a fit of rage. I dodged and ducked and landed punches as he got more and more frustrated. Finally I slipped past his defenses and punched him square in the face. Then he finally went down.

“See, I told you I’d kick your butt.” Jason swore at me, got up, and limped out. Serves him right; he’s a psychopath. Last year I watched him beat a man to death with a crowbar. Unexpectedly, I felt a pang of sympathy. That man did order his parent’s death, though, and I had killed Onomatopoeia...

The door slid open and Bruce walked in. I walked over to him and did something I should have done a long time ago.

“Bruce, I’m sorry about how I was before, with Onomatopoeia, and pushing you away…”

He gave me a gentle smile. “It’s okay, I understand. You were angry because your parents died. I was like that once too.” I nodded.

“And, uh, hey, cut Jason some slack, will you? He’s been through the same thing we have.” Bruce’s face darkened at that suggestion.

“Connor, you haven’t seen him, he-he’s going crazy, he’s ruthless and shows no mercy. He’s almost no better than the criminals…” he let that thought trail off. “Anyways, I came to tell you I have some urgent news. Nightwing reported back and said that the League have kidnapped Roy, Evelyn and Helena.” I felt my heart plunge.

“I have to go back for them.”

“You aren’t ready-”

“Bruce, please. They’re my friends. I’ve waited this long, even with them having John, but now they have everyone else I care about. Please, let me go. You can come, too.”

Bruce pursed his lips. “I can’t help you; I’ve got my hands full with a case here, some guy’s been killing people and stuffing them in pig costumes. Nightwing can, though.” He looked me dead in the eyes. “Are you absolutely sure?”

“Yes, I need to go.”

Bruce nodded and led me to another room with armour.

“You didn’t have your Green Arrow suit on you when you fell.”

“Yeah, it was destroyed in an explosion.”

“I have a contact at STAR Labs who can make you a new, better one if you want, but for now this should do.” He gestured to the different sets of armour and weapons lying around. “You’ll even look like one of them.” I grabbed a bow and clutched it so tightly my knuckles turned white.

I was going to save my friends.
