IWP: Green Arrow vol 1.7
Roy, Helena and Evelyn sat in Helena’s living room. Her aunt was out for the day and had allowed her to have friends over to cheer her up. Ever since Connor’s death, she’d just laid in bed in a pool of misery.
They sat in a silent, forlorn circle. None of them knew what to say. Connor’s death sat like a dead animal in the middle of their circle; it was there and obvious, but no one wanted to acknowledge it. The last week and a half had been awful enough; they wanted to escape into a peaceful, forgetful oblivion, but no one knew how.
Roy spoke first. “So, umm… Helena, how’s your day going?” He winced after. That sounded lame even to him.
They sat in more uncomfortable silence before Helena said “Oh, screw this!” And began weeping openly. Roy and Evelyn ran and hugged her, shedding tears themselves.
For a moment they rested in each other’s warm embrace, breathing heavily and sobbing. Then there was a knock at the door.
Roy broke away first. “I’ll go get it.”
He walked out and a couple seconds later sprinted back in, screaming “Everyone GET DOWN!”
They dove into the soft carpet as an explosion rocked the house; Roy glanced up, looking through the smoke, a ringing in his ears. He glanced behind him and saw Helena helping Evelyn to her feet. Roy and Evelyn locked eyes and he said one thing.
“Run.”
They stood up and started limping away as Roy shakily stood and raised his fists, preparing for a fight. Two heavily armoured men entered the room, brandishing swords. Against his better judgement Roy stormed at them with a lamp, swinging it wildly. He landed a hit on one man’s visored helmet while the other one kicked him back and raised a sword to strike the final blow. The visored one stayed his hand.
“No, we need him alive.”
Roy stood back up, taking in the scene: the carpet was scorched, the window was shattered, and the furniture was burning or tipped over. He glanced behind him and saw Evelyn and Helena running back into the living room.
“There’s more that way!” Helena shouted.
“They want us alive! We can fight our way out; they won’t kill us.”
The trio charged at the two men, punching and kicking. They did their best to restrain the trio; Roy saw Evelyn land a solid punch on the non-visored man’s face, her own face contorted in rage, her braid swinging in the air. Roy had never felt so proud.
He had his hands full with the visored man. He tackled him and they wrestled on the ground before the man hit Roy in the head with the butt of his sword. Roy’s vision went fuzzy and he lay back on the ground. He tried to stand but the man finally restrained him. Before everything went black, Roy saw the other man throw Evelyn onto the couch while a third man appeared and grabbed Helena; then the world went dark.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hey everyone, sorry for the longer wait between issues, I'll admit I haven't felt too great recently. In any case, here it is! I've also decided to stop doing the interludes; I originally had 5 planned for this volume but kinda lost motivation to do them.
