IWP: Green Arrow 1.3

The next few days passed normally. I went to school and did homework, and became acquainted with the company. Yin mostly sat in his room meditating, though occasionally he’d go to the Island Room and stare, muttering to himself in Mandarin.

It came as a surprise one night when we overheard that 2 cops had been found dead over near Jordan Avenue Intersection. There hadn’t been any dead cops found randomly since… since Carrie, actually. So I called up Roy and he came over.

We were in the lair suiting up when Yin came in. He’d wanted to come with me on patrol the first night he was here but I declined--I still didn’t fully trust him--and he hadn’t asked since. Roy glanced over at me; he still was uneasy around Yin.

“Hey, Yin,” I said. “We’re just heading out for the night; some dead cops were found.”

“Yes, it’s most unfortunate…” he fidgeted with his hands. “In any case, good luck, happy hunting. Be careful.” He said that last part with a dire look in his eyes, like it might be the last time he saw us.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “That dude’s weird,” Roy remarked as we raced over the rooftops in the chilly night air. It was a clear night and the moon was full, casting an eerie translucent shadow over the city.

“He did save my father,” I pointed out. “You’re right, though; I don’t really trust him, if I’m being honest.”

We came to the scene of the crime, a large intersection that had been sealed off by police. It was flooded with spotlights; we jumped down and saundered over to the scene.

“Captain,” I said. Captain Abbot jumped and looked around, putting her hands over her heart. She was a pretty brunette woman of about 30, the youngest police captain ever. She’d really cracked down on crime over the last few months, making my job much easier.

“Geez, you gotta stop doing that!” She looked relieved but was still breathing heavily. I couldn’t help but grin.

“Sorry about that. We heard you had a problem with some dead cops?”

She nodded grimly. “Yes, these two were found dead, stabbed, actually. We have no idea who did it, but they knew what they were doing; these guys died instantly. The stab wound pierced their hearts.”

“Mind if we take a look?”

“Go right ahead.”

Roy and I walked over to the grisly scene. There were two bodies laying on the ground covered by sheets but you could still see the blood seeping out from underneath. I went to grab the sheets when there was shouting and shooting. Instantly my heart started racing and I looked sharply over to where the commotion was happening. Three policemen were shooting at a figure in the shadows and a fourth was on the ground bleeding. The figure stabbed another one, glanced at Roy and I, and took off.

“Go!” I shouted. Roy and I took off after him; my legs were pumping from adrenaline and anger. We had to catch this guy.” He led us down a dark, narrow alley, the tops of the buildings almost overreaching and blotting out the moonlight. We came out onto another street and could already see him taking off towards an older building, set for demolition. Roy and I chased after him, kicking in the door. We could hear him above us, racing to the roof.

We sprinted through the gloom of the building, past furniture covered with white sheets. We were almost at the top when my comm crackled to life.

“Connor!” It was John.

“Kind of in the middle of something,” I huffed.

“It’s Yin! He said the whole thing’s a trap! You have to g-”

An explosion like a thunderclap ripped through the air and my whole world caved in on itself in a fireball.
