on the table

while we are speaking,

the light of a bottle

illuminates this moment:

drink up and remember

in every drop of gold,

in every topaz glass,

in every purple ladle,

that autumn labored

to fill these vessels

with wine; and in his labors

let the simple man remember

the dark soil and his duty

to tend the sweet grapes
