Mama Snapping Turtle

She was probably heading back to the water after laying eggs when I ran across her. I know they're fearsome creatures and need to be treated with respect, but that face seems so friendly and soulful. Photographed along the Seven Bridges Trail in the Van Loon State Wildlife Area, La Crosse County, Wisconsin.
