There were 5 of the original Eo class of electric locomotive built for the Otira to Arthurs Pass electrification which included a 5.25 mile (8.45km) tunnel on a grade of 1:33. They were built by the English Electric Company in 1922 and carried road numbers 2 to 6 inclusive and makers numbers 523 to 527 inclusive. They entered service in August 1923. They were replaced by the Toshiba built Ea class in 1968.
