The Chantry

Slapton, Devon

The college at Slapton is one of only four chantry colleges recorded in the south west of England. The quality of the masonry in the surviving ruins indicates that the college was a structure of some status in what was an isolated part of the country in the medieval period.

In the 18th century, the original gateway to the college was destroyed by villagers, who removed the stone to rebuild their houses (Henry VIII had dissolved the college in 1547).

Three sections of the garden walls - all of which are 18th or 19th century - associated with the Chantry are listed as Grade II.
