Fluid Dynamics.
Surface water waves exist due to the discontinuous change in density at the water-air interface. If their wavelengths are greater than a few cm they are gravity waves as gravity acts to restore a level surface. Smaller scale surface ripples are termed capillary waves as surface tension is the dominant restoring force. Shallow water waves occur when friction form the sea bed comes into effect creating turbulence within the propagating water wave.
