What techniques were used in photoshop?

I digitally painted the mermaid. I used different brushes to create her scales and facial features. I created the ocean using the "render clouds" button in photoshop. I constructed the background of the image using three separate photos that I found online. One is a city, one is a cliff, and one is a boat. I added light rays and water ripples as well. I burned and dodged the mermaid to add dimension.

 

Identify which design elements and principles you were following.

I followed the rule of thirds by placing the mermaid on the rule of thirds line. I used the principal of scale and proportion. You can tell that the things on the ocean floor are further away than the mermaid. You can see the depth of the ocean due to the gradient in the background and the light rays.

This image was a lot of fun to make. It was a whimsical design which suits my creative style.
