An SD-45 has appeared, and it has come to Chester for helper duties, to push trains from Chester to Hinsdale, so helpers weren't just for steam trains. In the Penn Central era, a stalled train on the steep ascent was a big headache for the west end dispatcher, and it was common, with train crews outlawing before getting their train to Selkirk. So, it seems as though Conrail was being a little more proactive, to avoid such difficulties. Of course, we thought the idea of an SD45 helping was extra cool! Chester, MA December 1976
